Cycle I Process

A Call for Letters of Intent was widely distributed throughout California. Information meetings were held in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego to describe Program priorities and the application and review process.

California investigators submitted 491 Letters of Intent (LOIs). After review, the LOI screening committees recommended that CBCRP invite the investigators who submitted 282 of the LOIs to submit full applications. The 235 applications received in response to that invitation were then evaluated. The Council then recommended to the University of California which applications to fund, based on reviewers' evaluations, Program priorities, and available funds.

CBCRP awarded $19,167,354 million in 78 grants to investigators at 22 California institutions and organizations. Award recipients include independent research institutes (e.g., La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation), medical centers (e.g., California Pacific Medical Center), for-profit industry (e.g., Cytel Corporation), federal laboratories (e.g., Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), and universities (e.g., University of Southern California, University of California campuses). Awards commenced on July 1, 1995.
