Tax Check Off Awards
While it’s true that the CBCRP is funded in part by a portion of a state tobacco tax, there is a better way to support us than by lighting up. Just contribute to the CA Breast Cancer Research Fund on line 57 of your California state income tax form 540—it’s simple, effective, and automatically tax deductible.
You benefit, and your contribution goes directly to support a program that links the urgency of the advocacy community with the expertise of the research community to develop innovative ideas for preventing, detecting, and curing breast cancer. Your contribution will play a part in the fi ght against a disease that claims the lives of over 4,200 Californians every year.
Tax Check Off Awards
Previous Tax Check-Off contributions have so far supported all or part of 26 research awards and four diversity supplements to existing grants. Our advisory council designated the tax check-off money for these projects because the projects epitomize the issues that need to be addressed in order to eliminate breast cancer and its effects.Researchers funded by the tax check-off award are investigating potential causes of breast cancer by looking at lifestyle influences such as diet and obesity and environmental factors such as dioxins and PBDEs. They are developing new prevention and treatment methods using natural and low-toxic products such as mushrooms and Chinese herbs. They are inventing new ways to detect breast cancer earlier (such as through optical detection or a blood test) and searching for ways to reliably predict which breast cancers will be aggressive. They are investigating the best means for providing support and information to socially and geographically isolated women, and they are pursuing ways to live well after a breast cancer diagnosis by looking at issues in returning to work, the partner’s role in recovery, and the effectiveness of support groups.
