As the 10th anniversary of the passage of the Breast Cancer Act of 1993 (the legislation that created CBCRP) draws near, we find ourselves immersed in an array of activities that not so long ago were no more than visions:

Our 9th cycle of grant funding has just been awarded. With this cycle of funding, we have come closer than ever to our goal of funding a well-balanced spectrum of truly innovative research in critical and under-supported areas. With this funding of 48 new research projects and 2 conference awards, the CBCRP has invested a total of nearly $150 million in breast cancer research over the past nine years, funding 569 projects at 62 different institutions across the state. Look for our Compendium of Awards soon, or visit our Web site to read about these exciting new research projects.

We are in final preparations for the CBCRP's fourth Symposium, being held in San Diego. We expect several hundred scientists, advocates, clinicians, and others to gather for 3 days of exciting research reports and stimulating exchanges. Highlights include a Keynote Address by Sarah Weddington, a Plenary Session on the Environment and Breast Cancer Prevention, and an Art Exhibition that brings the very human elements of breast cancer to the forefront of the Symposium. We hope you will join us!

The CBCRP's new Development Program continues to grow. The CBCRP was the chosen featured beneficiary of the San Francisco Chronicle 5K Cause to Run last month. Through marathon materials and our presence at the 3-day Health Expo, the word about the CBCRP's work is spreading even further.

The CBCRP is broadening its reach through collaborations with other organizations that help us educate breast cancer researchers and stimulate new collaborations and ground-breaking research. In March, we partnered with the Susan Love MD Breast Cancer Research Foundation to produce “Breast Cancer Course for Researchers: An In-Depth Interdisciplinary Review of the State of the Science.” We also sponsored the 3rd International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer. Coming up is the 24th Congress of the International Association for Breast Cancer Research - Advances in Human Breast Cancer Research: Preclinical Models, to be held November 1-5 in Sacramento.

We know that these efforts will lead us to the day when breast cancer is no longer a threat to women's health, but so much more remains to be done.
