Cycle I Grant Report
California investigators submitted 490 Letters of Intent (LOIs) for our first grant cycle, which were reviewed and evaluated by independent scientific experts ("peer reviewers") and Council members forming 11 study groups. The reviewers recommended inviting full applications from the authors of 282 L0Is.
The 235 grant applications actually received were then evaluated by review committees made up of independent experts and breast cancer survivor/ advocates. The evaluation criteria were the scientific merit of the proposed research and the extent to which the proposed project was innovative, involved multiple scientific disciplines, had the potential to translate into clinical services, and was directed to reducing cultural barriers to accessing the health care system for currently underserved populations.
Based on these criteria, BCRP awarded approximately $19 million to 78 investigators at 22 California institutions and organizations. Recipients include independent research institutes, medical centers, for-profit industry, federal laboratories and universities across the state.
Grants were awarded for innovative and creative breast cancer research that complements, rather than duplicates, research funded by the federal government and other agencies. BCRP Cycle I awards include:
- 34 grants designed to discover the causes of breast cancer and factors that influence the development of the disease;
- 17 grants to develop more effective techniques for the earlier detection of breast cancer;
- 18 grants to develop new approaches to prevent breast cancer;
- 8 grants to increase access to services for the early detection of breast cancer, particularly for underserved women;
- 1 grant to train graduate or undergraduate students for research careers in disciplines which are important to breast cancer research.
A more detailed summary of Cycle I grants is available through the BCRP office. A comprehensive Compendium of Awards is available from BCRP and on the WWW.
