Oakland, CA—October 20, 2003—Faith Fancher, an Emmy-winning news reporter for KTVU-Fox and an Executive Team member for the California Breast Cancer Research Program, lost her life to breast cancer on Sunday. As an Executive Team member, Ms. Fancher spearheaded fundraising and outreach efforts for the Program; she also was the keynote speaker at the 2002 Symposium, where she presented "My Journey through Breast Cancer: A Story of Faith".

Since her original diagnosis in 1997, Ms. Fancher survived multiple recurrences of the disease and devoted much of her life to raising awareness about breast cancer detection and treatment. She participated in clinical trials and several advocacy efforts, and founded "Friends of Faith", an organization that provides small grants to local organizations that fight breast cancer.

"We mourn the loss of our friend," says Mhel Kavanaugh-Lynch, CBCRP Director. "Faith's energy and passion touched our lives; her memory will continue to inspire our search for a way to end this disease."

The CBCRP

Created by the State Legislature in 1993, the CBCRP is the largest state-funded breast cancer research program in the nation and is administered by the University of California, Office of the President. To date, the CBCRP has awarded 569 grants to 62 scientific institutions and community entities, totaling nearly $150 million for research in California to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer. Grants from the CBCRP fill gaps not traditionally funded by other research programs to jump-start new areas of investigation that push the boundaries of research and foster new collaborations. The CBCRP is funded through the voluntary tax check-off program on personal income tax form 540, the State tobacco tax, and individual contributions.
