February 28, 2007—Oakland, CA—The California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is hosting a meeting in Ukiah for local advocates, healthcare providers, researchers, and others to address the environmental causes of breast cancer and the unequal burden of the disease. The stakeholder meeting will be held the afternoon of Monday, March 26, 2007. The event is open to all, and registration is free.

This meeting will give area residents the opportunity to tell CBCRP how to invest $18 million for the Special Research Initiatives. The CBCRP will provide a review of scientific highlights in environmental causes of breast cancer and disparities, then open a discussion to identify promising research topics and/or approaches to increase knowledge about and create solutions in these areas.

The Cancer Resource Center of Mendocino is co-sponsoring this event, the first in a series that the CBCRP will hold around the state. Other co-sponsoring organizations include: Breast Cancer Action; Breast Cancer Fund; California Black Women’s Health Project; California Health Collaborative; Commonweal; Health Education Council; Physicians for Social Responsibility—Los Angeles; Physicians for Social Responsibility—San Francisco Bay Area Chapter; UC Davis Cancer Center; UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Zero Breast Cancer.

The vision of the CBCRP Special Research Initiatives is to identify and support research strategies that both increase knowledge about and create solutions to the environmental causes of breast cancer and the unequal burden of the disease. The CBCRP has set aside $18 million to push breast cancer research forward in these two related areas.

The Ukiah Stakeholder Meeting will take place at the Mendocino Public Health Department conference room beginning at noon on March 26, 2007. Online registration and more information about the meeting are available at www.CABreastCancer.org/sri/ or by calling the California Breast Cancer Research Program at 888 313-2277.

About the CBCRP
The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program is to eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities.

Created by the State Legislature in 1993, the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) is the largest state-funded breast cancer research program in the nation and is administered by the University of California, Office of the President. To date, the CBCRP has awarded 725 grants to 89 scientific institutions and community entities, totaling more than $174 million for research in California to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer. Grants from the CBCRP fill gaps not traditionally funded by other research programs to jump-start new areas of investigation that push the boundaries of research and foster new collaborations. The CBCRP is funded through the voluntary tax check-off program on personal income tax form 540, a portion of the state tobacco tax, and individual contributions.
