Researchers funded by the California Breast Cancer Research Program (CBCRP) were recently profiled in the Sacramento Bee for their work on a new device that may detect breast tumors earlier and would significantly reduce the discomfort of standard mammography. The research team headed by John Boone, Ph.D., and Karen Lindfors, M.D., of the University of California, Davis, has developed a computed tomography (CT) scanner and is taking that scanner into clinical trial. Although it may be years before their breast CT machine is available for universal use, the potential of this device for improving our ability to detect breast cancer looks promising.

Dr. Boone will present his work on CT scanning as an alternative to mammography at the New Treatment and Detection Strategies breakout session at the CBCRP symposium, "From Research to Action: Seeking Solutions", which will be held September 9-11, 2005, at the Sacramento Convention Center.

The CBCRP

Created by the State Legislature in 1993, the CBCRP is the largest state-funded breast cancer research program in the nation and is administered by the University of California, Office of the President. To date, the CBCRP has awarded 617 grants to 70 scientific institutions and community entities, totaling over $156 million for research in California to prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer. Grants from the CBCRP fill gaps not traditionally funded by other research programs to jump-start new areas of investigation that push the boundaries of research and foster new collaborations. The CBCRP is funded through the voluntary tax check-off program on personal income tax form 540, the State tobacco tax, and individual contributions.
