Training Program Overview
The CRIBS ITP is an innovative face-to-face and online training program for both newly forming and experienced collaborative community-academic research partnerships. Collaborative partnerships include 2-3 Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs).  In each partnership, at least one Co-PI must be an academically trained researcher and at least one Co-PI must be a community member/leader. The ITP will provide training to stimulate community-based participatory research (CBPR) that addresses the environmental causes of and/or social disparities in breast cancer.

The ITP includes both face-to-face training sessions and innovative online training sessions. The five face-to-face trainings take place in 2-day sessions (Fri/Sat), once per month for five months, for a total of 10 days.  The online training portion takes place over the same five months, reinforcing and expanding on the learning that takes place in the face-to-face trainings. The online portion is “asynchronous” – participants work online at their convenience, engaging with classmates any time of the day or night.

What do we mean by CBPR?
CBPR is a collaborative process. It involves an equal partnership between community and research scientists, and they work together in all phases of a project, including:

  1. Identifying the research question

  2. Developing the research plan

  3. Carrying out the research

  4. Interpreting the results

  5. Getting the results back out to the community and other scientists (dissemination)

Training Objectives Overview
The training program will help partnerships learn to:

An additional goal of the CRIBS ITP is that partners will prepare and submit grant proposals to the California Breast Cancer Research Program Community Research Collaboration awards, Cycle 19 in 2013. Applications that are successful in the independent peer and programmatic reviews, would receive CBCRP research funding in August, 2013. Participants will be encouraged to submit their grant proposals to other funders, as well.

Training Schedule
The CRIBS ITP is scheduled for January – May 2012.

The face-to-face training will be held in Northern California on:

Participants will also participate in a Mock Proposal Review session in the Fall of 2012, with reviewers selected from outside California who have expertise in your subject area, your scientific methodology, and community-based participatory research.

Cost
Transportation, housing, and food for the face-to-face trainings are free to participants.  Participants are required to have access to a computer and the internet. No other costs are expected related to the training.

Each individual participant will receive a stipend of $2000 for full participation in the program. Costs associated with regular partnership work that takes place outside of the face-to-face ITP trainings (phone calls, transportation to meetings etc.) will be covered by the individual partners or their agencies.
